Some things you inherit are worth more than what you could ever put on a price tag.
When my Aunt Billie’s jewelry collection came to me, I inherited necklaces, bracelets, beautiful stones, unusual beads, vintage pieces and materials collected over many years.
But as I began going through everything, I realized something.
I had inherited much more than jewelry.
I had inherited a piece of my aunt’s story.
And strangely enough, as I looked at everything she had created, I began seeing a little bit of my own story too.
Meet My Aunt Billie
My Aunt Billie is a creative and fascinating woman.
She is a retired school social worker and clinical practitioner, a traveler, a philanthropist, an elephant lover—and a maker.
For many years, she collected beautiful and interesting beads, stones and jewelry-making materials. Her travels exposed her to pieces from different places and cultures around the world, and she used many of those finds to create jewelry by hand.
Some pieces are bold. Some are elegant. Some are funky and unexpected.
And many are completely one-of-a-kind.
That's Aunt Billie.
Her love of elephants eventually inspired the name BilliElephante, and today the elephant has become part of the identity of the collection that bears her name.
But there is another part of Aunt Billie's story that makes this collection even more meaningful.
Her heart for giving extends beyond her art. Her philanthropic work has included supporting efforts in Soweto Kliptown, South Africa, making the idea of “Pieces with a Purpose” especially fitting for the legacy behind BilliElephante.
Then the Collection Came to Me
When I received Aunt Billie's collection, I could have simply inventoried everything, attached prices and put the jewelry out for sale.
But I couldn't do that.
These weren't just products.
My aunt's hands had made them.
So I started looking closer.
I examined the beads. I noticed the clasps. I looked at the stones and materials. I read the tags she had written. When I came across something I didn't recognize, I researched it.
And the more I went through the collection, the more curious I became.
Where did this come from?
What kind of stone is this?
Where did she find these beads?
What made her put these particular colors and textures together?
Suddenly, I wasn't just organizing jewelry.
I was discovering Aunt Billie through the things she created.
And Then I Saw the Connection
This experience also made me think about myself.
People who know Chalises know me primarily through skincare and wellness.
They see the creams, oils, soaps, herbal products, hair care, men's grooming products and all the other things that eventually make their way onto the shelves.
But behind all of that is something I've probably never talked about enough.
I'm a maker.
I love creating things.
I formulate. I craft. I experiment. I garden. I research. I learn how to do things simply because I'm curious about whether I can do them. I've also recreated jewelry from old, broken piece and changed them into a totally new creation.
And once I learn something, one of my greatest joys is teaching someone else how to do it.
That's Adrienne.
And while going through Aunt Billie's collection, I had this thought:
Maybe the maker in me didn't start with me.
Here I was, holding things another woman in my family had imagined and created with her own hands decades before.
Different generations.
Different mediums.
Different styles.
But both of us makers.
That realization made bringing BilliElephante into Chalises feel very natural.

I've always envisioned Chalises as being bigger than a shelf of skincare products.
Chalises Heavenly Marketplace gives me room to share things that represent creativity, wellness, craftsmanship, discovery and purpose.

Not because I created it.
Because I didn't.
This is Aunt Billie's work.
My role is different.
I get to preserve it.
I get to document it.
I get to introduce these pieces to new people.
And hopefully, I get to make sure the woman behind them isn't separated from the things she created.
When someone purchases a BilliElephante piece, I want them to know they're choosing something with a history.
Some pieces may feature vintage materials. Others may include stones and beads collected from different places. Some are beautifully imperfect. Many cannot simply be reordered once they're gone.
That's part of what makes this collection special.

Carrying Something Forward
Building Chalises has taught me that entrepreneurship isn't always about creating the next new thing.
Sometimes it's about recognizing the value in what already exists.
Sometimes we're the creator.
Sometimes we're the teacher.
Sometimes we're the storyteller.
And sometimes we're simply the next pair of hands trusted to carry something forward.
With BilliElephante, I get to be all four.
So over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing more of Aunt Billie's jewelry, what I'm learning about individual pieces, some of the stories behind the collection—and probably a few surprises I discover along the way.
And as I do that, I think you'll also be seeing a little more of me.
Not just Adrienne the business owner.
Not just Adrienne behind Chalises skincare.
But Adrienne the Maker.
